EXHIBITION AT CHANGING ROOMS GALLERY IN WALTHAMSTOW

Climate dilemmas by Wendy Le Ber

Milka Sculac Sennett

The powerful effect of the climate - both as a weather condition and political situation - on people and life in general is the main concern of the new exhibition at The Changing Room Gallery in Walthamstow. The collection The Right Climate? by the local artist Wendy Le Ber is a vibrant display of works in a variety of forms and mediums, from photographs and photographic prints and watercolours to acrylic on canvas and mixed media.

However, Wendy Le Ber’s works are not just passive reproductions of our position in this consumerist society, but they also have a poignant critical note. Part of her work is a colourful display of Buddhist elements which radiate peacefulness and inner calm, while the other part points the finger at all what is negative in our society. This message is particularly strong in two of her largest mixed media works; Every Little Helps the Profits shows the map of United Kingdom overloaded with the signs for the largest UK retailer, while Trading the Commodity of Death examines the absurdity of landmines and death caused by them. The installation Badges of War which represent badges pinned on a desert army shirt, is an artistic protest against current wars, but also the concept of war in general.

- The work shown at the exhibition is the result of my artistic interpretations of Buddhist beliefs and the activist approach to every-day-life. I wanted to point out at the interconnectedness between the physical climate and peoples’ life. We need to understand the effects of our own actions, both personal and on a larger scale, in order to understand the world or oneself. – says Wendy Le Ber about her exhibition at The Changing Rooms.

The exhibition stays open till 30 September. Gallery opening times are 11am to 5pm. Admission is free.
