Art on Trees

Meeting to discuss the windows in the Oxfam shop as a venue for the E17 Art Trail, a group of us from the Waltham Forest Arts Club were thinking of other possibilities for the trail.

Katja was keen on the idea of getting some art away for free. Something I was very keen on to, we thought about what, how, when and where and came up with the idea of putting small pieces of artwork, sealed against possible rain, on the trees in the town square. The idea of art really growing on trees appealed and art grows on trees was born.

Early on Saturday morning the first of September Katja, Valeria, Pirasteh, Wendy, Monica and Dean were all busy tying work to branches of the lime trees that line the path from the bus station to the town square in Walthamstow.

The images were all fluttering in the wind very attractively, and it was great to see people curious and looking at the work immediately. Some were very surprised and pleased to find it was free, “great idea!” Said one young woman taking a print from a tree. More free art went up on Saturday the eighth of September and now would be an annual event.

More artists are invited to join us next year as part of the E17 Art Trail.
