Crossing the Circles of Water and Sunlight - 2006 Photograph

The raindrops falling, make mandala circles that break up the colours, of the reflected Autumn trees.
Some times the tree is more in focus, the raindrops making abstract forms on the surface of the photograph, we see the tree upside down, in it’s reflected form, but it appears to be in the water. We have to make a shift in our perception.

There is something about the reflective qualities of water that brings us delight, perhaps it is something to do with seeing this world as we do, given back to us as another sight, another way of seeing, that is contrary to our usual way of seeing, but also true to the objects being reflected.
Then there is the ancient traditions of using water to scry, to see into the future, or to gain new Knowledge.
We gaze into the water with expectation and curiosity.

I was on a solitary retreat when I took these photographs, I had been spending more time outside in the woods and gardens, and was watching the rain showers as they passed. I was stuck by the amazing colours of the trees reflected in the gathering pools of water, and the breaking up of the reflection by the rain drops.
When the sun came out it was quite magical, the sparkle and movement and colour, I was quite transfixed.

When I took the photographs I was not aiming to impose my ideas on the scene, but rather let my delight and appreciation merge with the space and allow the spirit of the scene to shine through.
